Port of Oakland workers petition against an unfair firing

Article

On March 14, 2024, members and supporters of SEIU 1021 at the Port of Oakland submitted a petition to the Port commissioners, bearing more than 100 signatures, calling for an investigation into the unjust dismissal of George Vaioleti, a union member and a dedicated employee of 17 years.

Their solidarity was unmistakable. They made their stance clear by donning union colors and wearing “Bring George Back” buttons in a call for justice. George expressed his gratitude for this demonstration of unity and support from his colleagues.

George’s speech was deeply moving as he shared personal anecdotes about his family and children.  Chapter President Joseph Friedman expressed his concerns regarding the excessive expenditure on litigation, noting that the money spent on legal battles could be better invested in the Port’s development.

To all SEIU 1021 members at the Port of Oakland and beyond, the union’s message is clear: Stay focused on your work, maintain harmony with each other, and stay connected with your stewards and elected leaders. When we fight, we win!
